Recent Controversy
In October of 2023, columnist Soleil Ho called out Kusama on racist comments she made more than 20 years ago in her published autobiography, Infinity Net.
In an article titled “SFMOMA is set to have a blockbuster show. But what about the artist’s racist writings?”, Ho called out derogatory statements in some passages of Kusama’s book. In the autobiography, Kusama described a small Black girl having an “exotic face,” and “envisioned America as a land full of these strange, barefooted children and virgin primeval forests.”
This happened ahead of her hit exhibit in partnership with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition at SFMOMA, titled "Infinite Love," premiered on October 14 and has already sold out for the entire month of November. Kusama’s lively polka dot designs and popular Instagram-worthy installations garnered her a reputation for being an unconventional pop culture figure.
Kusama has since apologized for the anti-black comments, stating:
“I deeply regret using hurtful and offensive language in my book. My message has always been one of love, hope, compassion, and respect for all people. My lifelong intention has been to lift up humanity through my art. I apologize for the pain I have caused.”

SFMOMA’s director Christopher Bedford has also declared the museum’s stance on the issue, encouraging people to “treat artists the way that we treat ourselves,” in that we as individuals are capable of growth and change. In an interview, he states:
“If we’re really going to dig into what she said and when, then you do have to engage with radical empathy for her. You have to situate yourself in the late ’60s, you have to analyze what she actually wrote… I’m in favor of taking the time to provide context and analyze based on data as opposed to having knee-jerk reactions to individual statements. I think that it’s on the museum to provide that research, and it’s up to the public to have the patience to dig into it.”
